Helping Out

Our scout group is run entirely by our parents and volunteers. As a parent/caregiver there are many ways you can support the group. Here are some of the ways in which you can help.

Become a leader - leaders are always needed for all of our sections. Training and mentoring are provided. Contact our Group Leader - David Mann at chartwell@group.scouts.nz for more details.

Join the committee - we have a variety of roles in the committee and only a small time commitment is needed for most of them. Current vacancies are:

  • Secretary - organise monthly committee meeting, take meeting notes and email out after. Approx 2-4 hours per month
  • General Committee member - come along to the meetings to provide input to how the group is run. Approx 2 hours per month.

Maintain the hall - here is the list of jobs that need to be done at the hall. We would love to be able to remove some of these items from this list but the only way this will happen is with parent/caregiver help. If there is an item off this list that you feel you could help with please contact Rachel Clarke at hallhire@chartwellscouts.org.nz. All sanding and painting equipment is supplied.

This list was updated on 19 July 2023, as the jobs are done we will strike from the list and acknowledge who helped.

  • Repair underfloor door - the door to the underneath of the hall needs the padbolt replacing
  • Refurbish back doors - the back doors need tidying up, sanding and painting
  • Noticeboards - we have a number of noticeboards that need putting up
  • Borer bomb gear locker - the gear locker had borer and all the borer ridden wood was removed but needs borer bombing some time in November through January
  • Borer removal in kitchen - the kitchen needs borer bombing and if necessary borer injecting
  • Completed Dec 2023 Nigel Leitch and Adam Plimmer Improve drainage - across the back of the hall replace the soil with drainage metal and concrete
  • Improve airflow under hall - install some ducting that will take the air from the least accessible parts of the hall to the outside. Can use some passive heating technologies
  • Paint storeroom - the storeroom next to the kitchen needs preparing and painting
  • Tidy up mezzanine floor wall - this needs a piece of trim applied, and then prepping and painting
  • Stain mezzanine floor - this needs staining and polyurethane applied, as well as the existing stain and polyurethane tidied up.
  • Polyurethane replacement floor - the ply floor replacement needs polyurethane applied
  • Build built in seats - across the back of the hall where the floor has been replaced we'd like to build some built in seats. This would increase the storage available.
  • Refurbish basketball baseboard - this needs prepping and painting
  • Add a balustrade to the stairs - the stairs are open and a balustrade would improve their usability
  • Tidy up interior walls - at the top of the concrete block walls are some lightweight ply boards that need tidying up. This would need to be done before we can paint the hall interior
  • Paint hall interior - the interior of the hall needs painting
  • Repair floorboards - a number of the floorboards need repair. This would need to be done before we refurbish the floor
  • Refurbish hall floor - the floor needs sanding and polyurethane applied, or recovering in ply, or fully replacing
  • Paint Bathrooms - the bathrooms are due for a touch up paint again
